Decision Science Summit 2026
On June 18–19, representatives of the FlexCycle project participated in the Decision Science Summit 2026 (DSS'26), held in Madrid, Spain. The event brought together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and technology experts to discuss the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in supporting decision-making across a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, energy, transportation, and robotics.
The project was represented by Renata Legenzova (Vytautas Magnus University) and Irene Garcia-Camacho (IRI - Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial, CSIC-UPC), who delivered the presentation “FlexCycle: Adaptive Robotics for Soft Materials Recycling – Addressing European Green Deal Objectives.
The presentation introduced the project's vision and highlighted how adaptive robotics and AI-based technologies can contribute to improving the recycling of complex soft-material waste streams. Particular attention was given to the challenges associated with handling deformable and variable materials such as textiles, electrical cables, and fuel-cell components, which often remain difficult to process using conventional automation systems.
The summit provided an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas on the role of Artificial Intelligence in real-world applications. Discussions throughout the event emphasized several key aspects: the importance of high-quality data for effective AI solutions, the continuing role of human expertise and responsibility in decision-making processes, and the need to balance technological innovation with appropriate governance and risk management strategies.
These topics are closely aligned with the objectives of FlexCycle, which combines robotics, AI, and industrial expertise to develop innovative solutions capable of supporting safer, more efficient, and more sustainable recycling processes. By addressing some of the most challenging waste streams within the circular economy, the project aims to contribute to Europe's environmental and industrial sustainability goals.
The event also provided a valuable platform for networking and knowledge exchange with experts from academia, industry, and public institutions, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in advancing innovative technologies for sustainable resource management.
FlexCycle would like to thank Raffaele Maccioni, President and Co-Founder of the Decision Science Alliance, and all the organizers for creating an inspiring environment for dialogue and innovation.
